Broadis expands into Middle East, launches Abu Dhabi

[ad_1]

Leading Scottish firm forms Middle East LLP and relocates partners to service local energy, oil and gas clients

Top Scottish law firm Brodies has set up a Middle East LLP and opened an office in Abu Dhabi to expand its client base in the region.

The new office, the company’s second international presence after its Brussels headquarters, will be led by infrastructure and oil and gas partners Greg May and Bryan Wilson. Wilson will be based in Abu Dhabi, while May will split her time between her new office and Broadis’ base in Aberdeen. The Abu Dhabi office will also house one seconded professional, with another departing over the summer.

Brodies managing partner Nick Scott, who will also oversee the Middle East firm, said: “We have been working with and for clients in the Middle East for many years, including the UAE, Qatar and Oman, so this is a very carefully Consider, but naturally, the next step.

“We believe that being close to our clients is important, enabling us to provide the highest quality legal service and ensuring that our lawyers are integrated into the environment in which our clients live and work.

“Our client base in the Middle East has so far focused on oil and gas. Many of the larger players in the energy transition are traditional oil and gas players, and cities in the Middle East — and Aberdeen in the U.K. — are becoming part of this. A transformational center of excellence. We look forward to working with our customers and supporting them at this important time for the energy industry.”

May has 25 years experience in the oil and gas industry and is an expert in drilling, well engineering and offshore construction. Qualified in UK and US law, he joined Brodies in 2011 from Swiss offshore drilling company Transocean as General Counsel for the Europe and Africa business unit.

At the same time, Wilson brings extensive expertise in upstream oil and gas agreements and service industry work. Before joining Brodies in 2019, he was General Counsel for TotalEnergies and Chief Counsel for Maersk Oil. He primarily advises clients on high-value and complex projects where conflicting strategies hinder their development.

The pair are part of Brodies’ Tier 1 oil and gas team, described by The Legal 500 as “unmatched in the industry”. Led by Aberdeen-based partner Claire Munro, known for her expertise in upstream M&A and project development, the practice’s key clients include Spirit Energy, Dana Petroleum and Nobel Upstream.

The launch of Brodies in Abu Dhabi sees it join a number of international companies looking to establish energy products in the Middle East, including British firm HFW, which last month Co-leader of DWF’s global infrastructure, buildings and energy team hiredSlava Kiryushin, in Dubai.

Spring, American company King & Spalding Increase energy and project development partners Shearman & Sterling with Brendan Hundt and Dan Feldman in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
