Olympic Trials Qualifier Sophia Plaza Verbal Loss to Florida State
new commit: UF has received new verbal commitments from Olympic Trial Qualifiers for the 2024-25 season and beyond Sophia Square Charlotte, North Carolina.
she will join Lily Daly and emma weinte As part of the Alligator Class of 2028.
Regarding her pledge, she said:
“I’m excited to announce my commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at the University of Florida!! A big thank you to my friends, family and coaches for their continued support. Go Gators!!
Plaza competed in her club swim with SwimMAC Carolina and qualified for the Olympic Trials in the 400 IM with a time of 4:48.33 at the Indianapolis stage in March, finishing second overall name. There, she also placed third in the 200m IM and 200m Breast.
Back in December, Plaza finished sixth in the Juniors East 200 breast competition and won the 400 IM B final.
Her best moments include:
- 400 IM – 4:13.40
- 200 Breasts – 2:12.54
- 200 IM – 2:00.47
- 100 Breasts – 1:02.76
- 200 rounds – 2:02.30
A current junior at Myers Park High School, Plaza finished fourth in both the 100 Chest and 200 IM at the 2023 North Carolina 4A State Championships. She finished fifth and third in those events during her sophomore season.
She will be a valuable asset to the Gators as her top finish in the 400 IM is fast enough to score in the B final of the SEC Championship.
