His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, has approved the ‘Dubai Public Beaches Master Plan’, which aims to increase the total length of the emirate’s public beaches by 400%.

The plan, part of Dubai’s 2040 urban master plan, features the opening of new beaches and the development of existing beaches with state-of-the-art facilities.

He unveiled the master plan during a visit to Jebel Ali Public Beach, where he was received by Mattar Al Tayer, Commissioner for Infrastructure, Urban Planning and Welfare Pillar.

He reviews the layout and implementation phases of the master plan, the short- and long-term measures that will be taken at each phase, and the amenities, services and features that will be added to each beach.

Speaking at the gathering, Sheikh Mohammed said: “Dubai is committed to ensuring that the city is developed to the highest standards. The emirate places high priority on improving the quality of life and ensuring the well-being of its citizens, residents and visitors.”

“The ‘Dubai Public Beaches Master Plan’ will increase the length of public beaches by 400% by 2040. Their total length will increase from 21km to 105km in the next 17 years. 84km of public beaches will be added to meet the needs of the emirate Population growth and an influx of tourists from all over the world,” he said.

Public beach services will increase by 300% by 2025,” he added.

The new master plan demonstrates Dubai’s commitment to providing beachgoers with a unique experience in line with the goals of D33, the Dubai Economic Agenda, to reinforce the emirate’s position as one of the top three tourist cities.

Sheikh Mohammed was briefed on the first phase of the master plan spanning 54 kilometers of public beaches, including the development of Jebel Ali Public Beach in partnership with Nakheel, Wam reported.

The beach will be developed into a unique eco-tourism attraction offering a variety of activities. Mangroves will be planted on some beaches to enhance protection from erosion and preserve marine animal habitat. Various public services and facilities will be provided at the beach, it said.

The public beach will also feature cycling and walking paths, water sports facilities, rest and recreation facilities, restaurants and food trucks, shops and investment outlets as well as spaces for families, beach camping and parking.

According to reports, a direct public bus route will be launched to connect the Jebel Ali Metro Station with the new Jebel Ali Public Beach, providing beachgoers with direct access.

The public will be able to visit turtle enclosures built on the beach in accordance with global conservation standards. It added that the fencing would support nationwide efforts to rescue and restore sea turtle species and return them to their natural habitat as part of a broader goal to protect the country’s marine environment.

The master plan also includes further development of Al Mamzar public beaches (Creek and Corniche). The development will start construction in June this year and is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

It added that the project would include new public facilities, pedestrian and cycle paths, and the planting of mangroves along the coastal section of the beach.

A 4,000-meter bike lane will be added to Al Mamzar public beach as part of the new plan, and this year 9 percent of the public beach will be designated for night swimming.

The number of beach services will double by 2024 and another 3 percent of public beaches will be designated for night swimming, while beach services will triple by 2025 and the length of bike lanes will increase by 20 percent, the report said.

A range of short- and long-term initiatives will seek to increase investment in beach commercial facilities. In the short term, retail kiosks will be built at Jumeirah Beach 2 and Umm Suqeim 1, new water sports facilities will be installed on the beach and smart safes will be installed.

It added that long-term initiatives include a study to explore new commercial investment opportunities through the introduction of retail outlets, restaurants and marine sports activities, as well as the development of the Jebel Ali public beach to provide camping facilities.
