Google unveiled its support for the UAE’s artificial intelligence (AI) efforts and sustainable development plans, with key organizations including the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI), the Abu Dhabi Department of Municipalities and Transport, and the Ministry of The partnership states AI, the digital economy and remote work applications.
The announcement was made at an event on the MBZUAI campus, where Google unveiled three major initiatives.
First, Google will provide research awards to MBZUAI faculty and staff focused on improving the representation of the Arabic language in AI-based models addressing the societal impacts of sustainability and climate change.
In addition to financial support, Google will provide support in the form of cloud computing, data analysis and machine learning resources. Additionally, MBZUAI faculty members will have the opportunity to collaborate and exchange knowledge with Google researchers and engineers.
Second, Google will work with the Abu Dhabi Municipalities and Department of Transport to launch the “Green Light Program”.
The plan involves implementing machine learning techniques to optimize traffic lights at intersections, thereby reducing the stop-and-go traffic that pollutes urban areas.
By modeling traffic patterns and providing intelligent recommendations for traffic plan modifications, such as adjusting green light times for specific periods, congestion and greenhouse gas emissions can be minimized, ultimately improving traffic flow and air quality within cities.
Finally, Google and the UAE Ministry of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy and Remote Work Applications will jointly host the “AI Majlis Series”. These quarterly private parliamentary meetings will serve as a platform for leaders from Google, government, academia and the UAE business sector to discuss and advance AI principles and policies.
Centered around responsible innovation, the inaugural AI Majlis will feature prominent figures including Omar Al Olama, UAE Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, and Karan Bhatia, Global Vice President, Public Policy and Government Relations, Google.
Subsequent sessions will explore the impact of AI on sustainability, healthcare and the future of work.
Bhatia said: “Google has been an AI-first company for seven years, and we are at an exciting inflection point. We have an opportunity to make AI more helpful to humans, businesses, communities and everyone.
