Mustafa Altaf, Managing Director of Altaf Hussain Trading Co said: “The first batch of more than 90 containers of Sindhri and Almas mangoes has been shipped by sea and the quality is very good, fully ripe and fragrant.”

“Dusehri, Saroli, Anwar Ratool, Gulas Khaas, Langra and other mangoes will be shipped to the UAE under these two varieties. Normally, the supply of mangoes lasts until September unless the monsoon rains are interrupted,” Altaf said.

Gulraiz Yaseen, managing director of the Pakistani supermarket chain, said air shipments of mangoes have already started, while sea shipments will start in the next few days.

Prices may be flat or slightly lower than last year due to the weakness of the rupee against the UAE dirham, he said. The rupee has depreciated sharply against the UAE currency over the past year, falling from 54.4 in May 2022 to 80.4 this month.

Pakistan is one of the largest mango exporters in the world after India, China, Thailand and Indonesia. Apart from UAE, Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong, UK, US, Canada, EU countries and Singapore are the main export destinations of Pakistani mangoes.

About a dozen varieties of Pakistani mangoes are exported, including Chaunsa, Langra, Sindhri, Anwar Ratool, Dusehri, Saroli, Almas, Fajri, etc.

The UAE is one of the major export destinations for Pakistani mangoes, with three-month mango exports amounting to millions of dollars.

“This year, the season is slightly delayed because the heat is not as intense this year, but the harvest is better.”

He said that mango prices should be more competitive than last year. Currently, the wholesale price for the first batch is just over Dh30 per box, weighing about 6kg.

“The supply will increase in the coming weeks and months. However, the price will depend on the supply and demand of the mangoes. But in the past, if the supply is insufficient, the price has also dropped to Dh18 to Dh20 per box,” he said.
