GECF Secretary-General hails UAE’s leadership at COP28

Doha, Qatar – General Secretary of the Gas Exporters Forum (GECF), HE Eng. Mohamed Hamel held a virtual meeting today with HE Ahmed Mohamed Alkaabi, Assistant Undersecretary for Electricity, Water and Future Energy at the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure of the United Arab Emirates.

They discussed the current state of the energy market and its medium and long-term prospects, as well as preparations for the upcoming GECF meeting. HE Hamel expressed his gratitude for the unwavering and invaluable support of the UAE, a respected member of the GECF. He reiterated his heartfelt congratulations to the UAE for its recent promotion to full membership of the Forum.

HE Alkaabi conveyed greetings from HE Eng. Suhail Mohamed Almazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, commended the tremendous progress made by the GECF Secretariat in terms of membership expansion, reporting quality and enhanced international engagement.

Echoing the views of the GECF, HE Hamel offered his heartfelt congratulations and pledged his full support for the UAE to host COP28. HE Hamel said: “I am confident that COP28 will be a great success, not only in terms of its excellent organization, but also in terms of important outcomes. The UAE has been a leader in tackling energy poverty and climate change, advancing practical financial solutions for sustainable development and technological solutions that combine economic development, social progress and environmental protection in a balanced manner.COP28 Chairman His Excellency Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber’s extraordinary experience in various energy sources, innovative technologies and ten years of climate diplomacy will undoubtedly be the key to the success of COP28 impetus.”

Responding to GECF’s commendation, HE Alkaabi expressed his appreciation for the well wishes and reiterated the UAE’s commitment to ensure the success of COP28. HE Alkaabi said: “As responsible producers and consumers of energy, we understand the urgency of transforming the global energy system and reducing emissions. Together we must accelerate decarbonization while the world accelerates adoption of cleaner energy sources. The UAE’s commitment reflects A $50 billion investment in renewable energy projects in 40 countries, and our investments in nuclear energy, solar energy and carbon capture and storage. These are not just promises; these are concrete and practical actions towards a sustainable future.”
