Burundi investigates grenade explosion, promises to eliminate “terrorists” | Burundi News

[ad_1]

The Ministry of the Interior said that when “unidentified terrorists” threw grenades at two locations in Bujumbura, at least two people were killed.

The Burundian government promised to conduct a thorough investigation into a series of deadly “terrorist” grenade explosions that attacked Bujumbura, the country’s economic capital.

The attack late Monday followed a deadly grenade explosion at a bar in the capital Gitega on Sunday and a series of mortar shells fired at Burundi’s International Airport on Saturday night.

The Ministry of the Interior said in a statement that on Monday night, “unidentified terrorists” threw hand grenades near Bujumbura parking lots and markets, killing two people.

Medical and security sources told Agence France-Presse that three people were killed, while Prime Minister Alain-Guillaume Bunyoni said more than 100 people were injured.

The Ministry said it condemned the “barbaric behavior” of the bombing and promised to “conduct a thorough investigation and stop these unnamed terrorist cowards.”

No one claimed responsibility for the grenade attack in Bujumbura or Gitega bars on Sunday, which resulted in two deaths.

The RED-Tabara rebel group issued a statement on Twitter that it launched a mortar attack on Bujumbura Airport on Saturday.

The attack was launched the day before President Evalist Ndayhimiyah flew to New York to attend the UN General Assembly, and no one was injured.

A senior Burundian official who asked not to be named told AFP: “These are coordinated attacks by peaceful enemies. They want to show within three days that there was no peace in Burundi when President Ndayhimiya attended the UN General Assembly. “

“But they were wrong. Although they rarely break out, the situation is under control.”

RED-Tabara has a rear base in South Kivu in the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo. It emerged 10 years ago and is now the most active rebel organization in Burundi.

Since 2015, it has been accused of launching multiple fatal attacks or ambushes throughout East African countries.

In 2020, it said it was behind a series of attacks that killed more than 40 people. These attacks came from the security forces of the ruling National Defense People’s Congress-FDD Party and the Youth League.

The Burundian government and many diplomats believed at the time that this rebel group of about 500 to 800 people was led by one of the country’s most fierce opponents, Alexis Sinduhije, and he has always denied this. statement.
