Applications open for Aiken Jazz Camp 2023 Joye | Entertainment

With applications now open for Joye in Aiken’s Summer Jazz Camp, high school jazz musicians in the area will have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work one-on-one with some of the most accomplished professional jazz musicians in the world for four days while having A dynamic world of process fun.

Held June 22-25 in partnership with USC Aiken, the camp will be taught by five Juilliard-trained instructors: trumpeter Riley Mulherkar, Aiken Jazz Artistic Director Joye and 2019 Lincoln Center Emerging Artist Artist Award recipient; percussionist Brian Carter, who recently won a Tony Award for his work on Broadway; blockbuster pianist Mathis Picard, who was artist-in-residence at Italy’s prestigious Umbria Jazz Festival last year; bass Dan Chmielinski, a Grammy winner known not only for his live performances and recordings, but also for film scores; and young saxophone star Jade Elliott ), who has been highly regarded in the Los Angeles jazz scene since her high school days.

The camp is open to students in grades nine through twelve. Accepted instruments are trumpet, trombone, saxophone, clarinet, drums, keyboards, stringed double bass, and electric guitar. Other instruments may be considered, such as violin and vocals.

Joye in Aiken Principal Sandra Field encourages all interested students to apply.

“This is really a very special opportunity for any student who is interested in jazz and wants to learn more about the genre,” Field said. “Our five faculty members are internationally renowned musicians, but they are also excellent teachers who know how to really connect with their students. Campers over the past two years have told us that one of their favorite experiences has been the opportunity to work with coaches Forging such a close connection.”

Scholarships will be provided to any student unable to participate in other activities, Field said.

“Our tuition is already low compared to other jazz camps, but we realize that this may still be a consideration for some families, in which case we will waive tuition,” Field said. “We will never turn away a student for financial reasons.”

The four-day non-residential camp will be held at the Etherredge Center on the USC Aiken campus. Each day includes rehearsal and performance lessons as part of a jazz ensemble, masterclasses and clinics on individual instruments, music theory, jazz history, and jazz improvisation and performance.

To kick off camp, the teachers will hold a Jazz Explosion concert for the public on Thursday, June 22nd at 7pm. Tickets are $20. On Sunday 25th June, students will give a free public concert to showcase the skills they have acquired in the camp.

“We are so grateful to the community for providing this incredible experience for our students,” Field said. “Augusta Aiken ENT and Allergy and Shaw Industries sponsored the camp itself, Jim and Sandra Field sponsored a faculty concert honoring Jack Mullin, and Savannah River Mission Completion and Aiken Regional Medical Centers were co-sponsors of our student concert. South Carolina The Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts are providing grants to support the camp, and many generous individuals are providing scholarships for students. This is truly a collaborative effort of our many donors, sponsors and funders. We could not do it without them .”
