Local author debuts her first novel ‘Simple Times’
ALLENTON – Allenton resident Trisha Koop Abear’s debut novel, “Simpler Times,” will be published June 1 by DRL Press.

Simpler Times has been described as a nostalgic slice of America. Anyone looking for a brief escape from today’s chaotic life is encouraged to pick up this book. In these pages, readers will learn about a young woman named Rose and how she finds her strength when her army husband Flynn is deployed. In an unlikely place, she finds what she and Flynn have only dreamed of. But can it all come and be taken away so quickly? Could their connection transcend all understanding?
Trisha has loved writing and journaling all her life, but it never occurred to her until the last few years to write a novel of her own. Koop Abear shared that making “Simpler Times” was a labor of love and a dream come true.

Kick off the summer with live music at The Ripple Center
AITKING — The Ripple Center at the historic Opera House in downtown Aitkin recently announced its summer lineup of live music.

- Cassandra Cole, June 3 at 7pm. Americana Pop: Inspired by her favorite songwriters like Fiona Apple, Bob Dylan, and ZZ Ward, she uses her songwriting to tell stories.
- Jim Lauderdale w/Band & Lillie Mae opens June 8 at 6pm. Country: A “composer’s composer” whose songs have been recorded by dozens of artists, notably George Strait, Gary Allan, Elvis Costello, Blake Shelton, the Dixie Chicks, Vince Gill and Patty Loveless.
- The Bad Companions, June 10, 7 p.m. Roots-Rock: Appeared on NPR’s “Prairie Home Companion,” made national television appearances and rocked Minnesota airwaves from Duluth to Le Seuer. From your corner bar to county fairs, car shows and music festivals across the Midwest, they bring fun, dancing and family-friendliness with action-packed live performances.
- DAC Ball, June 15 at 7pm. The ballroom is open to the public. Sponsored by Atkin County DAC.
- Christy Costello Band with Extraterrestrials opens June 17th at 7pm. Rock & Roll: Composer, multi-instrumentalist, DJ, talent buyer, promoter, mother, and yogi, Costello has cemented herself as a major player in the Minneapolis music scene.
- Creeping Charlie, June 23 at 7pm. Alternative Rock: Started by two sisters influenced by ’90s indie rock, word of Creeping Charlie spread like an evergreen through the Twin Cities music scene.
The Kingery family to perform at the Park Show on June 1Brainerd – The Kingery family from central Minnesota has been beloved since the Park Show began as a family of 10 – Mike, Chris and their eight children singing and ministering together through music. It has grown to include three sons-in-law and nine grandchildren. They have loved singing together for the past 18 years. They sing primarily gospel bluegrass, but also incorporate fiddle, patriotic, Americana and a cappella. Their combination of tight harmonies, uplifting songs and family unity is sure to inspire. The hope of the Kingery family is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ and draw others to Him. “I will praise the name of God with song, and I will magnify him with thanksgiving.”—Psalm 69:30.

Showtime is June 1st at 7pm at Gregory Park in Brainerd. Bring your lawn chairs or blankets for an evening of great music in the park. The rain location is the center at 803 Kingwood Street, Brainard. Summer road construction projects have already begun. Plan to spend some time visiting Gregory Park. The concert is a collaboration between the City of Brainard Park and the Recreation Department and Center. There is a show every Thursday at 7pm through the end of August. The performance is made possible by financial support from the Deerwood Bank, and in honor and memory of Helen K. Mills and Stewart C. Mills, Jr., who both loved music and loved Brainerd Lakes.
