Sometimes, less is more, and that’s what we took home from Fashion Forward Dubai (FFWD) on day two of the event. One of the most memorable collections to date was that of Khulood Thani, who presented a collection from her beloved label Bint Thani on Friday night.
Khulood usually presents her popular label’s collections in London rather than Dubai, but at this year’s FFWD she made an exception with a presentation of her roughly 12 pieces.
The stand-up-only show attracted the likes of Nadine Kanso, Aya Nakkash and Sally Sohelili – all known for their personal style and appreciation for Khulood Thani. The Dubai-based designer presented her ready-to-wear collection called “The Journeyer”. Drawing inspiration from the coast of the UAE, her collections combine architecture with softness.
Not only are her innovative cuts, such as the double collar, attractive, but her use of color looks flawless as well. Pair soft blues with navy, orange, and aqua for a striking palette. Love long cut trousers, which is very easy for Bint Thani.
The first fashion show on day two of FFWD was hosted by Starch Foundation, a non-profit organization that helps launch Lebanon’s emerging designers, and it was a regular feature at FFWD, as there was always some new talent to look out for. Each of the designers involved in the show presented about a dozen looks.
This season, Lebanese designer Lobnan Mahfouz’s Per Vers athleisure-chic collection. Athleisure is the fashion trend of wearing clothing designed for physical activity outside the gym to the office, shopping, or other social occasions.
Mahfouz used mesh on the jacket, making this sporty fabric perfect for evening parties.
Beirut-based fashion designer Bashar Assaf put a more grown-up spin on the trend, pairing zip-up hooded tracksuit tops with high-waisted, wide-leg trousers. It’s all about minimalism, with simple long silhouettes, and her palette is sandy. As for designer Salim Azzam, it’s all about the white shirt, whether it’s a shirt dress or a blouse with cropped pants. Adding to this whimsical touch are some very charming floral and nature-inspired embroidery. Somehow, you’re reminiscent of a school uniform, but chicer. It’s a shame the show didn’t attract the crowd it should have, as rain kept some of the fashion crowd at home. I guess they are afraid of frizzy hair!
