“We are very aware of cases of international students facing deportation orders for falsifying university offers. To be clear, our focus is on identifying the culprits, not punishing the victims,” Prime Minister Trudeau said during a parliamentary debate.

Hundreds of students from India have taken to the streets claiming they were duped by immigration counseling agencies who provided them with fake documents. The revelations came to light when the students applied for Canadian permanent residence in March.

According to Federal Foreign Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, the Indian government has discussed the issue with the Canadian government and assured that “if anyone misleads them (students), action should be taken against the guilty party”.

Prime Minister Trudeau added: “We recognize the enormous contribution international students make to our country, and we remain committed to supporting victims of fraud as we assess each case.”

Likewise, a committee of the Canadian parliament voted unanimously to urge the border services agency to stop deporting the Indian students.

In a symbolic move, the all-party immigration committee voted unanimously Wednesday to ask the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) to waive the inadmissibility of the affected students, the Toronto Star reports.
