• Yoga is an ancient physical, mental and spiritual practice that originated in India.
• The word “Yoga” is derived from Sanskrit and means to join or unite, symbolizing the union of body and mind.
• Today it is practiced in various forms around the world and is growing in popularity.
• Recognizing its universal appeal, the United Nations proclaimed 21 June International Day of Yoga on 11 December 2014 through resolution 69/131.
• International Yoga Day aims to raise awareness around the world of the many benefits of practicing yoga.
• A draft resolution to establish an International Yoga Day was introduced by India and supported by a record 175 member states. The proposal was first raised by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his speech at the opening of the 69th session of the UN General Assembly.
• The resolution states “the importance of individuals and populations making healthier choices and following lifestyles that promote good health.”
• In this regard, WHO is also urging its Member States to help their citizens reduce physical inactivity, one of the top 10 leading causes of death globally and a major risk factor for non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer and diabetes.
