Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus guides UN agencies by attacking it to deal with the Covid-19 crisis

Diplomats said on Thursday that Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has received broad support to serve as the head of the World Health Organization for a second term, officially nominated by at least 17 EU member states, and supported by countries in other regions.

As the nomination deadline passed, diplomats stated that they did not know there were other nominees, which indicated that Tedros will have no opposition in the May 2022 election.

Tedros, a former health and foreign minister of Ethiopia, elected as WHO’s first African director-general in May 2017, has led the global fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.

He guided the UN agencies to attack the way they deal with the crisis, which was triggered by the new coronavirus that emerged in China at the end of 2019 and has caused 4.9 million deaths.

The diplomat said that although the Trump administration accused Tedros of being “China-centric,” he refused to accept the accusations, but the relationship with the Biden administration has heated up, especially after Tedros publicly stated that further investigations into the origin of the virus are needed. , Including after the audit of the Chinese laboratory.

However, due to the friction of the Tigray conflict, he has been avoided by Ethiopia, which makes it necessary for other countries to intervene and submit his name for a second five-year term.

“He was not unscathed, but in general, the international community believes that it is really important to support him,” a senior diplomat from a non-EU country told Reuters.

A source in the German government made it clear to Reuters on Wednesday that Berlin will formally nominate Tedros and seek support from other EU member states.

A Western diplomat said that at least 17 EU countries said they would also submit his name for nomination, adding: “I know other regions are nominating him.”

A source with direct knowledge of the nomination process told Reuters that no one mentioned the challenger, and multiple envelopes are expected to nominate Tedros.

The diplomat said that African countries widely support Tedros, who advocates obtaining vaccines, but does not want to part ways with Ethiopia.

They added that the United States has not opposed his new term.

However, according to WHO’s procedures, the envelope will remain sealed after October 29, which means that it cannot be ruled out that a country may nominate another candidate. This is to restrict election campaigns prematurely.
