As R. Kelly’s trial draws to a close, the singer’s lawyer said that R. Kelly is like the civil rights icon Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Defense attorney Dvorkscannick told juror Kelly to ask the prosecutor to prove him guilty and rule out reasonable doubt, just like Dr. King is fighting for constitutional rights. New York Post report.
Cannick quoted King’s “I have been to the top of the mountain” speech and told the jurors that Dr. King protested on the streets across the United States because the government at the time was unfair and truthful to all citizens.
“Somewhere, I read about freedom of speech. I read about freedom of assembly somewhere. I read about freedom of the press somewhere,” Kannick quoted Kim from his historic speech.
Cannick added that King led the civil rights movement and he tried to keep the government “loyal to the paper.”
“This is what Robert wants to do,” Cannick said.
Cannick also shot prosecutors, claiming that their cases were flawed, and claimed that they encouraged witnesses to lie in the stands, misled jurors, and promoted false statements.
“He doesn’t have to recruit women,” Cannick said. “This is their continued narrative.”
R. Kelly is on trial because he is accused of leading a company composed of employees from his “core circle”, which allegedly allowed him to recruit and sexually abuse girls for more than two decades.
Prosecutors accused R. Kelly Sexual abuse of several teenage girls, Including the late Aaliyah, who illegally married her when she was 15 years old.
