Senior UN official urges Myanmar to act before it is too late conflict news

[ad_1]

The conflict between the armed resistance forces and the army in recent days has triggered a new round of evacuation in the northwestern region.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet warned that Myanmar would face a human rights disaster under military rule and urged the international community to take more measures to prevent the conflict in the country from worsening.

Bachelet said in a statement on Thursday: “The national consequences are terrible and tragic-the regional consequences can also be far-reaching.”

“The international community must redouble its efforts to restore democracy and prevent wider conflict before it is too late.”

Since the military seized power in a coup on February 1, Myanmar has been in turmoil, ending 10 years of tentative steps towards democracy and sparking anger at home and abroad.

According to the United Nations, more than 1,120 people have been killed since the coup, many of whom were killed in strikes and protests by security forces across the country to suppress those who opposed the army’s return to power. Thousands of people were arrested.

Western countries condemn the military and impose selective sanctions, but critics say they must take tougher measures, including an arms embargo.

Bachelet said that Myanmar failed to fulfill the agreement with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to stop violence and start dialogue.

“This highlights the urgency of taking strong accountability measures. It also violates promises to ASEAN leaders,” she said.

The former Chilean president also urged all parties, especially the military, to allow unrestricted access to humanitarian aid and called for the immediate release of all political prisoners.

She called on all armed forces to protect civilians and stated that the use of air strikes and artillery in residential areas must be stopped immediately.
