Abu Dhabi [United Arab Emirates]19 June (ANI/WAM): The Anwar Gargash Academy of Diplomacy (AGDA), the EU Mission to the UAE, the Swedish Embassy in Abu Dhabi and the Swedish Middle East and North Africa Institute for Dialogue organized a panel discussion to discuss The conference preceded an emphasis on the important role of women leaders in advancing the climate agenda and accelerating the green transition.

The panel discussion on “The Role of Women’s Leadership in Addressing the Climate Agenda” brought together distinguished guests and influential speakers who are active in climate action and women’s empowerment. Panelists included Laila Mostafa Abdullatif, Director General, UAEWF, Dr Dena Assaf, UN Resident Coordinator, UAE, Dr Sara Chehab, Senior Research Fellow, AGDA, Independent Consultant Hafsa Halawa, Regional Vice President, Chafic Traboulsi, President, Network Operations and Sales, Ericsson Middle East and Africa Director, and Malak Abdulla, UAE Youth Climate Representative at COP28. Charlotta Sparre, Director of the Swedish Dialogue Institute, moderated the panel discussion. The event highlighted the significant contribution of women leaders in the UAE and across the MENA region in tackling the climate agenda, accelerating the green transition and making climate change negotiations inclusive, setting the stage for women’s voices to be heard.

AGDA Director General Nickolay Mladenov said: “Through this event, we intend to promote the role of women leaders in the UAE and the MENA region in tackling the urgent climate agenda. Join our esteemed Working in partnership, we strive to inspire and empower women as we build momentum for COP28.

In closing, Andrea Matteo Fontana, EU Ambassador to the UAE, highlighted the need to create more spaces where everyone, including women and girls, can effectively participate in the collective effort to tackle the climate crisis and move the agenda forward.

He said: “Today, we hear some positive developments, but we must acknowledge that persistent systemic barriers continue to impede women’s ability to effectively participate in the climate agenda. The reality is that women are still underrepresented in climate forums, including At the COP. far fewer women than men are involved in negotiations on key climate issues.

“This year, the UAE’s COP28 presidency demonstrated its commitment to elevating women’s leadership – including naming two exceptional female leaders as their champions. But each of us must do our part to continue breaking down these barriers and creating new opportunities to advance women’s leadership in climate action.”

The event was attended by representatives from the UAE diplomatic community, government and specialized agencies, international organisations, NGOs, academia, think tanks, the private sector and youth organisations.

The event is a powerful platform to recognize the contributions of women leaders in addressing the climate agenda and advancing sustainable development.
