New York [US]June 19 (ANI): Representatives from several countries at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) have criticized the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan and called on the Taliban government to lift gender-based restrictions on women and girls, Khaama Press reported.

In examining the report of UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan, Richard Bennett, members of the Security Council called on the Taliban’s de facto authorities to respect and protect the rights of all people in Afghanistan, including women, girls, religious minorities and political groups.

Envoys from various countries spoke of the dire humanitarian situation in Afghanistan at Monday’s rally. They are particularly concerned about bans that limit women’s and girls’ access to education, work and social participation, Khaama Press reported.

They demanded that the international community pay close attention to human rights violations in Afghanistan and pressure the Taliban to change its behaviour.

Rina Amiri, the U.S. Special Envoy for Women, Girls and Human Rights in Afghanistan, said that women’s rights in Afghanistan are a strategic priority for the United States. “The United States condemns the Taliban’s systemic discrimination against women and girls and stands with the people of Afghanistan in their fight for human rights and dignity,” she said.

Amiri warned that if the international community does not act on violations of women’s rights in Afghanistan, women’s rights elsewhere will be threatened.

Meanwhile, the French envoy attending the meeting said the Taliban were keeping women and girls in houses and in the dark. He added: “According to the Richard Bennett report, such restrictions are not seen anywhere else, with the Taliban’s policy of repression in Afghanistan seen as a ‘war crime’.”

Whereas the Spanish representative called for a full investigation into the Taliban’s treatment of women and whether it considers it a “war crime”. He also called for human rights abusers to be held accountable and their immunity ended, Khaama Press reported. (Arnie)
