Iron Age, pre-Islamic artefacts found in Abu Dhabi

[ad_1]

Abu Dhabi: Archaeologists in Abu Dhabi have revealed numerous archaeological finds including artifacts such as swords and ceramics from the Iron Age and Pre-Islamic periods, the Emirates News Agency (WAM) reported.

The Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism (DCT Abu Dhabi) said the new finds span from approximately 1300 BC to 600 AD.

A team of archaeologists at the end of a salvage excavation of part of a necropolis dating back to the pre-Islamic period (300 BC to 300 AD) uncovered archaeological treasures developed on a road in the Shaabiya neighbourhood, in the center of Arr Al Ain discovered during the project, east of the Al Ain Museum.

About 20 graves are recorded in the cemetery, and “very well preserved” items include amphorae (a type of water jug), bronze bowls and other ceramics.

They also found a large number of iron weapons in the tomb, including arrows, spears and several swords, one of which was 70 centimeters high and intact.

The department said the presence of the cemetery suggested that settlements from the same period may have been located nearby.

It said more artefacts had been found at an 11.5-kilometer-long project in the Al Kharais area.

These include an Iron Age cemetery containing a massive stone tomb and at least 35 graves. Another area revealed pre-Islamic burials, including one containing iron weapons.

Archaeologists have also uncovered irrigation systems and agricultural land. Other items found included jewelry and seashells.
