But diplomats said that China, Russia and the United States have reached an understanding that Moscow and Beijing will not object to Kyaw Moe Tun’s temporary stay in Myanmar’s UN seat as long as he does not speak during the high-level meeting.
“I withdrew from the list of speakers and will not speak in this general debate,” Kyaw Moe Tun told a Reuters reporter, adding that he knows the understanding between some members of the UN Credentials Committee, including Russia and China. And the United States.
The Burmese military government has appointed veteran Onturan as the UN special envoy, and Jue Meng Tun has requested that his UN certification be renewed, even though he was the target of a plot to kill or harm him because of his opposition to the February coup.
The UN certification issue is handled by a nine-member committee whose members include the United States, China and Russia. It traditionally meets in October or November.
According to the rules of the General Assembly, Kyaw Moe Tun will remain in the seat until the Credentials Committee makes a decision. The same rule applies to the representative of Afghanistan.
The news of Kyaw Moe Tun’s absence on Monday came as the violence related to the coup d’état on February 1 continued to displace thousands of civilians.
Since Aung San Suu Kyi’s government was overthrown by the military in February, Myanmar has been in turmoil, triggering a nationwide uprising that the military tried to suppress.
Attacks on the army have increased after legislators who were dismissed by the general earlier this month called for a “people’s defense war”.
