Letter: Entertain, not indoctrinate – Laguna Beach local news

[ad_1]

I am a regular visitor to Laguna Beach and felt compelled to respond to Jennifer Zeiter’s letter in the June 9th edition of your publication.

While I respect everyone’s feelings and applaud anyone who expresses an opinion, I found significant bias in Ms Zetter’s letter. Did she or her parents have a problem with Milton Burrough or Philip Wilson playing Geraldine in clothes to entertain or make us (including the kids) laugh? Straight men have worn skirts as a form of entertainment since the beginning of entertainment. By the way, women are also involved in “drag” but are often left out of the conversation. Women in William Shakespeare’s plays are men.

In today’s polarized era, any gay person (I’m not even sure if they’re gay) who dresses up for pure entertainment is demonized and accused of “indoctrinating” our children. Anyone who thinks that a boy or girl between the ages of 2 and 7 can associate fun, entertaining drag with “indoctrination” is ignorant. More like thoughts of prejudice and hate come to mind. Trust me, drag queens have no interest in instilling this in our children or other adults.

Ms. Zeiter, please join us at the “Entre Nous” event in Provincetown, MA in October. I’m sure you’ll be shocked because the men in gowns who attended the event were all straight and married to the women. It’s not just gay men who wear skirts. Kids will be exposed to straight guys in skirts at this event, I don’t think little boys are going to run home and tell their moms they want to be drag queens.

Do you also support banned books? Banning books encourages anarchy and has no place in our democracy. If you don’t want to send your kids to “drag story time” that’s your choice, but if I want to send mine, please don’t try to take away my choice. You can read books that celebrate heterosexuality, but no one can read books that celebrate homosexuality. Really!

Good luck Laguna Beach Museum of Art! I also want to remind Ms. Zeiter that the gay community also pays taxes and their voices should be heard!

“It’s time for our community to come together.” What exactly do you suggest? Should we burn dying drag queens, or drag them downtown and douse them like the Salem witches? Relax. They just want to entertain and make us laugh.

James Garnett, Phoenix, Arizona.
