An accident occurred near a copper mine in Cotabambas Province, Apurímac, Peru, resulting in at least 15 deaths and 3 injuries.
According to local media citing police sources, a bus in the Peruvian Andes was transporting workers at MMG Ltd’s Las Bambas copper mine and fell from a cliff, killing at least 15 people and injuring 3 others.
According to the Peruvian radio station RPP, the accident occurred on Friday in the Cotabánbas province of Peru’s Apurímac region.
RPP reported that the bus fell approximately 200 meters (656 feet).
China Minmetals Resources did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The Las Bambas mine in Cotabambas is one of the largest mines in Peru.
Peru is the second largest copper producer in the world.
The Andes range across the country, with winding roads overlooking towering cliffs.
In Peru, accidents of buses falling from cliffs are not uncommon.
In 2018, a bus with at least 48 people fell from a cliff to a rocky beach 100 meters (328 feet) along the coastal road north of the capital Lima, killing at least 48 people.
In November 2017, a bus fell into the river from a bridge in the southern Andes, killing 20 people.
It is estimated that in 2016, land transport accidents caused more than 2,600 deaths.
