According to Ward, Clark made the decision to create “an inherent tension” among Billingsley and other child actors, including Ian Petrella, who played Ralphie’s brother Randy Parker, when “these two children — two bullies — showed up on set like they weren’t quite sure what was going to happen.”
Despite the cast’s intentional separation, Ward said the actors mostly got along on set when they were on set. Ward, Anaya, Billingsley, Petrella, and their partners Scott Schwartz and RD Robb all return after decades for this year’s “christmas story“
“We liked each other,” Ward said. “And then as we grow, we always have touchstones that we can relate to, and then we have to build that touchstone into another movie.”
“A Christmas Story,” released last November, received mixed reviews. In IndieWire’s review, executive editor Kate Erbland wrote That “despite the apparent warmth [director Clay] Kaytis, co-writer Nick Schenk, and returning star and co-writer Peter Billingsley tackle the material, and whatever magic propelled the original into holiday-movie classic glory is sorely lacking. “
“A Christmas Story Christmas” is streaming now on HBO Max.
