A group of fathers set up a “Dad on Duty” group at a Louisiana high school to combat violence

TSR positive image: A group of fathers in Shreveport, Louisiana literally understood the old adage “It needs a village.”

After a week of violence at Southwood High School resulted in the arrest of 23 students, a group of parents decided to unite and take matters into their own hands.

About 40 fathers formed the “Dad on Duty” organization, which is dedicated to curbing school violence by being present and showing love to the children.Dads work shifts, greet students in the morning and help maintain a positive learning environment, according to CBS News.

The students believe in the work of this group because there has not been a single incident on campus since the fathers showed up.

“We are dads. We decide who is the best person to take care of our children? Is it us,” said Michael LaFitte, who founded the duty dad.

Even the students are sharing their opinions of the campus father.

“I immediately felt a sense of security,” one of the students said. “We stopped fighting; people started to go to class.”

A student said that the father can end everything through “appearance”, but the father will also be there to bring light to the student’s life.

“They just made funny jokes, like,’Oh, hey, your shoe didn’t untie,’ but it really didn’t untie,” a student commented.

So basically, it’s an effective combination of tough love and dad’s jokes.

“The school was just happy-you can feel it,” a student said.

It sounds like Dad on duty will stay and even hope to start chapters in schools in Louisiana and across the country.

“Because not everyone has the image of a father in the family — or has a man in their life, period. So just coming here makes a big difference,” the fathers said.
