A helicopter carrying 16 people crashed in Kamchatka, Russia | Aviation News

[ad_1]

After the Mi-8 helicopter crashed in Qiandao Lake, at least 9 people were alive, while the whereabouts of the other 7 people are unknown.

According to the local government, a helicopter carrying 16 people crashed on the Kamchatka Peninsula in the Russian Far East. Most of them were tourists. Seven of the passengers were unaccounted for.

The company said in a statement on Thursday that the Mi-8 helicopter crashed in Thousand Island Lake in the Kronotsky Nature Reserve.

It added that, according to preliminary information, “the ship has 3 crew members and 13 passengers”, all tourists.

40 rescuers and divers were dispatched to the scene. Kamchatka is located more than 6,000 kilometers (3,728 miles) east of Moscow.

According to the local Ministry of Health, 9 people were rescued.

The source told Interfax News Agency: “Nine people have been found and they are all alive,” adding that the search operation is still continuing.

The fate of the remaining seven is still unknown.

The Russian Commission of Investigation, which is responsible for the investigation of air accidents, stated that it has launched an investigation into violations of aviation safety rules.

Vityaz-Aero helicopters transport tourists to the Khodutka volcano near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.

The Kamchatka Peninsula is vast and has few residents, but it is popular with tourists because of its volcanoes and scenery.

In July, all 28 people aboard the Antonov An-26 twin-engine turboprop aircraft were killed in a crash on the Kamchatka Peninsula.

Russia has a poor aviation safety record in history, but it has significantly improved its aviation standards since the 2000s.

The country’s main airline has switched from older Soviet aircraft to more modern aircraft.

But maintenance issues and non-compliance with safety rules are still a problem.
