A helicopter carrying 16 people crashed in Kamchatka, Russia-News

News organizations reported that nine people were found alive and seven were missing.

The emergency services said that a Mi-8 helicopter carrying 16 people crashed on the Kamchatka Peninsula in the Russian Far East earlier on Thursday. News organizations reported that 9 people have been found alive and 7 people are missing.

The local emergency service said that the helicopter operated by Vityaz-Aero had a hard landing near a lake in the southern Kamchatka Peninsula, carrying 13 passengers and 3 crew members.

The national news agency RIA quoted sources from the emergency services department as reporting that the helicopter was carrying tourists from Moscow and St. Petersburg. RIA said the helicopter fell into the lake.

Interfax news agency quoted a source from the Kamchatka Ministry of Health and reported that 9 people were found alive at the scene. TASS quoted an emergency service representative as saying that seven passengers and two crew members survived the crash.

Kamchatka Peninsula is very popular with tourists because of its natural beauty. It is located more than 6,000 kilometers (3,728 miles) east of Moscow and approximately 2,000 kilometers west of Alaska.

In recent years, Russian aviation safety standards have improved, but accidents, especially those involving aging aircraft and helicopters, are not uncommon.
