A pivotal moment in Queen Elizabeth II’s reign | World News

[ad_1]

Here are some of the key moments that defined the reign Queen Elizabeth II:

– 1947: Commonwealth Broadcasting –

The heiress, Princess Elizabeth, who broadcasted from Cape Town on her 21st birthday, will dedicate her life to serving the Commonwealth.

This is the measure of her dominance.

– 1952: Princess to Queen –

Her father, King George VI, died on February 6, 1952, at the age of 56, while Elizabeth was visiting Kenya with her husband, Prince Philip.

At 25, she flew back to England. Winston Churchill was her first prime minister and brought his experience with him.

– 1953: Coronation Ceremony –

On June 2, 1953, Queen Elizabeth II was crowned at Westminster Abbey in central London.

It was the first major international event to be televised, and as people gathered in the vestibule to watch the ceremony, sales of the sets surged.

– 1977: Silver Jubilee –

The Queen toured the UK and the Commonwealth and reaffirmed her vow of service.

In the UK, street parties are held, bunting flags are hung, and tables are set in the streets.

The celebration is a ray of light in a time of economic downturn, industrial decline and a series of labor disputes.

– 1992: “A Terrible Year” –

The lowest point of the Queen’s reign: Her eldest son, Prince Charles, parted ways with wife Diana in an accessible book.

Meanwhile, her second son, Prince Andrew, was separated from his wife, her only daughter, Princess Anne, divorced her husband, and Windsor Castle was severely damaged by fire.

She called it a “terrible year.”

– 1997: Diana dies –

Diana’s death shocked the heart of the royal family.

The Queen has been heavily criticised for letting her family mourn privately in the Scottish Highlands – a move aimed at sheltering Diana’s young son – rather than fleeing to London.

She gave a rare live address to the nation at Buckingham Palace amid public pressure and accusations of her being out of touch.

– 2002: Golden Jubilee –

After the tumultuous 1990s and the deaths of the Queen’s mother, also known as Queen Elizabeth, and sister Princess Margaret earlier this year, the celebrations allowed Britons to once again show their support for the monarchy.

Street parties are back, with a concert at Buckingham Palace crowned by Queen guitarist Brian May playing the national anthem on the rooftop and millions of people lining up in shopping centres to party.

– 2011: State visit to Ireland –

It was the first visit to Ireland by a British monarch since the Republic of Ireland gained independence in 1922.

The visit is seen as the final piece of the Northern Ireland peace puzzle and will require the largest security operation the republic has ever seen.

However, through some highly symbolic gestures — including speaking in Irish — she dissolves enough postcolonial angst to be allowed to move around.

– 2012: Olympic Games and Diamond Jubilee –

Queen Elizabeth toured every region of the UK to mark the jubilee ahead of the four-day party in June, while other members of the royal family toured across the Commonwealth.

Celebrations include river pageants, lighthouses lit on land, street parties and Thanksgiving services.

The monarch then starred at the London Olympics, appearing in the opening ceremony alongside James Bond actor Daniel Craig.

– 2021: Coronavirus and Health Concerns –

The Queen was forced to self-isolate at Windsor Castle when the coronavirus pandemic broke out in 2020, but that hasn’t stopped her from dating online.

Royal receptions have been replaced by virtual appearances for everyone from ambassadors to the public.

Prince Philip died in April 2021 and his funeral was held amid coronavirus restrictions.

With restrictions eased, the Queen has resumed her public role, notably hosting G7 leaders in Cornwall in June 2021 and treating US President Joe Biden for tea in Windsor.

But concerns about her health have forced her to cancel a series of events after it was revealed she spent a night in hospital following an unspecified test in October 2021.

– 2022: Platinum Jubilee and Covid –

On February 6, 2022, the Queen became the first British monarch to reign for 70 years, but the platinum jubilee had a rough start.

Andrew settled his U.S. sexual assault civil case for an undisclosed sum while police investigate an “honor cash” claim against one of Charles’ charities.

On February 20, 2022, she tested positive for Covid-19 after resuming in-person audiences, where she complained to an attendee about mobility issues.

She made two appearances during the four-day public celebration of the jubilee, and appointed her 15th prime minister, Liz Truss, in Balmoral in September.
