Abbas Rizvi: I learned the hard way what it is to overcome failure and achieve success

  1. Describe your background and the company’s history in detail.

I am an Electrical Engineer, specializing in welding equipment. I have been in this industry for 25 years working with major brands such as Lincoln, Miller, and Oerlikon. I quit my job early this year to start my own business and navigate the loopholes in the market. I started by promising myself I would not invest anything into the company. I made contacts all over the world and started calling on them to share in profits from the deals we made.

  1. What do you want to achieve in the workplace and what does your company expect from its employees?

I want to achieve a target of $1 million before the end of the first year. For that I expect the people to give 100% devotion to their jobs and find a way to make it happen.

  1. What are your greatest company and team asset?

The people I work with.

  1. What steps have you taken to get where you are in your career?

I have simply been able to learn every day. I learned to deal with the accomplishments I’ve had over the years and also handle the mistakes I’ve made. I learned the hard way what it is to overcome failure and achieve success. I’ve learned the new products and established the market for it to be successful. I’ve learned to repair old products and serve the customer better with little to no investments. Never give up on learning.

  1. What is your motivation for starting this company?

What keeps me motivated to run my business is the lifestyle I enjoy because of it. I don’t have to wait for a long weekend to enjoy my days. I don’t have to schedule my family time around my business. Sure, there are days when I get frustrated but most days, I actually enjoy running my business. And when I look at everything that I have gained because of it, it just makes me value my business even more.

  1. What are some of the obstacles you’ve faced in achieving your goals?

None. Starting this business was a smooth ride. It is with great pride I can say that Dubai has really made it a priority and simple for people to set up their businesses. Companies like Meydan FZ and Smartzone have made the process even more simple.

  1. How best would you describe yourself in just one word?

Positive.

  1. What gives you a sense of purpose and direction on Mondays?

Empowering others. My purpose is to help others see their own power and strength. I want to make each person feel better about themselves and have an added sense of self-confidence. In order to do that I allow for employee autonomy and at the same time responsibility. I create an exceptional work environment that empowers people and understands what motivates them. Making money is the second priority. I care about doing the right thing first.

  1. What was the most innovative or creative project that you worked on?

Securing one of the biggest orders from one of the largest EPC contractors here in Dubai. This was a journey of several months and we put in hard work to make sure the order was ours.

  1. What key values helped you overcome obstacles in your career? Tell us a story about the most memorable incident in which you demonstrated leadership.

Key values I would say are recognizing the people’s abilities you work with. I have delegated the work accordingly and found success in it. The most memorable incident was when we were working on securing the biggest order from one of the largest EPC contractors, I was responsible for, first and foremost, my team and secondly getting the order. We worked day and night and I personally made sure my team members were well fed and reached home safely every day. The result was that more than celebrating the success of this deal we focused on the fun we had together and my team showed love and appreciation for what I did for them.

  1. What makes your company’s services/solutions or products unique? What is coming soon in terms of new offerings and innovations?

Nothing. We don’t have any unique products or services. What we do have is a sense of direction and purpose which we live for. Our attitude is most important in making the customer feel he is correct and, at times, we compensate for it. We strive to make it our goal to meticulously and painstakingly underline our efforts into keeping the customer happy and satisfied.
