Abdul Latif Jameel Health has announced the appointment of three world-renowned medical and biotechnology leaders as Special Scientific Advisors. They will work with the leadership team to achieve the company’s mission to accelerate the delivery of modern healthcare to those who need it most.
The first consultant, Professor Lord Ajay Kakkar PC, was Honorary Professor of Surgery and Director of the Institute of Thrombosis at UCL. After completing his medical degree at King’s College Hospital Medical School, he obtained his PhD at Imperial College London. His research interests include the prevention and treatment of venous and arterial thromboembolic diseases and cancer-related thrombosis.
Prof. Lord Kakkar was joined by Prof. James J. Collins, Termeer Professor of Medical Engineering and Science in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Institute of Medical Engineering and Science (IMES) and Department of Bioengineering. Professor Collins’ research group works in synthetic biology and systems biology, with a particular focus on the use of network biology approaches to study antibiotic action, bacterial defence mechanisms and the emergence of drug resistance.

Professor Charles Coombes, MBBS FRCP MC FMedSci, Professor of Medical Oncology at Imperial College London, is the third advisor to join Abdul Latif Jameel’s Health Advisory Board. As an Honorary Consultant Medical Oncologist at the Imperial College Healthcare Trust and Director of the Imperial CRUK Cancer Centre, Professor Coombes is committed to developing new methods for predicting response to endocrine therapy in breast cancer and research aimed at understanding mechanisms of resistance to endocrine therapy, including developing New anticancer drugs.
