Abengoa launches second phase of major Abu Dhabi desalination project – Chemical Engineering

Abengoa SA (Seville, Spain), in association with SEPCOIII, has started the commercial operation of the second phase of the Taweelah desalination plant (Abu Dhabi) following the successful completion of contract testing. This is the largest reverse osmosis desalination plant in the world (909,218 m3/day) and pioneered the integration of the production of drinking water with the production of clean energy. The project is located at the Taweelah power and hydropower complex 45 kilometers north of Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates).

Specifically, the second phase of testing at the Taweelah desalination plant was successfully completed on April 9. Following the successful completion of contract testing, our clients, leading developers, investors, owners and operators announced the commercial operation of Taweelah Desalination Plant Phase 2 electricity generation and desalinated water production plant, ACWA Power, TAQA and Mubadala.

Previously, Abengoa had successfully diluted 450,000 m in Phase 1 of Taweelah, which entered commercial operation and was delivered to customers in mid-2022.3/sky. The plant produced 909,218 m3/day (Phase 1 + Phase 2), making it the largest production plant in the world. The Taweelah desalination plant guarantees year-round water supply to the city of Abu Dhabi (population approximately 4.5 million) and is the first large-scale plant in the emirate to combine drinking water production with clean energy production, thanks to the installation of photovoltaic solar energy with a capacity of more than 70 MWp field. The project will reduce the energy demand of the desalination plant in a sustainable manner. Furthermore, the project on the coast of the Persian Gulf is part of a plan by the government of the United Arab Emirates to encourage private participation in the country’s infrastructure.

Abengoa’s scope of work at the Taweelah plant included design, engineering, supply, assembly supervision, commissioning, start-up of reverse osmosis and reprocessing systems for major equipment, and advising on pretreatment processes carried out by third party parties. All in all, the Taweelah desalination plant meets every drinking water parameter required by the emirate of Abu Dhabi, including hardness, alkalinity, LSI (Langelier Saturation Index), SDI (Silt Density Index), pH and boron content.

Abengoa has once again demonstrated its ability to develop complex projects from a technical point of view and to adapt to adverse working conditions in very different countries, thus responding optimally to the client’s requirements. It has also consolidated its position as the world’s leading company in desalination and strengthened its presence in the Middle East, where it has a very broad product portfolio: In Saudi Arabia, the Jubail 3A desalination plant (600.000 m3/day), Rabigh III (600,000 m3/day) and Shuaibah III (250,000 m3/day), all completed; Durbar (47,750 m3/day), in the United Arab Emirates, in operation; and Salalah (114,000 m3/day), in Oman, has also been done.
