These publications feature more than 100 works by more than 60 artists
Abu Dhabi Music and Art Foundation and Art Jameel held a fascinating panel discussion to celebrate the release of two important books documenting the evolution of the UAE art scene: Emirates Art II and National Portrait II, Abu Dhabi’s Book Companion 2022 The flagship of the 2019 festival, “Portrait of a Nation II: Beyond Narrative”, was held in Manarat Al Saadiyat from 20 January to 16 April.
Maya El Khalil, who curated the landmark exhibition, and Melissa Gronlund, editor of Emirates Art II, joined writer Maryam Al Dabbagh and artist Walid Al Wawi to explore the idea – sparking “art “The question of what is missing from the term. Viewers had the opportunity to interact with panelists during an informative Q&A session and to purchase signed copies of these two landmark books at the Art Jameel store.
Commenting on the launch of the two publications in Dubai, Ms. Huda Alkhamis-Kanoo, founder of Abu Dhabi Music and Arts Foundation (ADMAF) and founder and artistic director of Abu Dhabi Music Festival, said: “ADMAF publications are Highlighting the exceptional creativity of the artists and protagonists who have contributed to the extraordinary progress of our country, have been at the forefront of the Foundation’s mission since its inception nearly three years ago. The accompanying book for Emirates Art II and our landmark exhibition, a Portrait of the Nation II is a tribute to the impressive rise of the country’s art scene over the past 50 years and the people who inspired it.”
She added: “We are delighted to partner with Art Jameel to present the invaluable insights of curator Maya Al Khalil and renowned author and editor Melissa Gronlund into the remarkable transformation of the nation’s art landscape documented in these two historical publications.”
Portrait of a Nation II, documenting over 100 outstanding artworks in the “Portrait of a Nation II: Beyond Narrative” exhibition, including 17 commissions by over 60 artists who have shaped the nation’s artistic and cultural landscape, including Hassan and Hussein Sharif, Nujoom Al Ghanem, Mohammed Kazem, Farah Al Qasimi and many more. Prefaced by a select group of prominent art and cultural figures, the book aims to chart the evolution of the nation’s art scene and explore how narratives about history are formed across five themes involving language, family, exile and community .
Emirati Art II, edited by Gronlund, consists of a series of roundtables, interviews and oral histories, including Zaki Nusseibeh, Sultan Al Qassemi, Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Kevin Jones, Manal Ataya and Nawar Al Qassimi among others. Depicting the UAE’s thriving arts scene and its global leadership as an arts and cultural hub, this book is an unprecedented dialogue with those who have written and continue to write art history in the UAE.
