The parents of a child who died due to medical negligence have been awarded Dh300,000 in compensation.
The Supreme Court of Abu Dhabi has issued a ruling directing a hospital and two of its doctors to pay compensation to the parents of a child after they were found guilty of medical negligence that caused the child’s death.
The parents filed a lawsuit against the hospital seeking Dh15 million in compensation for the moral and material damage they suffered as a result of the loss of their son, official court documents said.
They said they took seriously ill children to hospital for treatment.
The parents say doctors caring for their child were negligent in not taking the necessary medical steps to treat the boy, which contributed to his death.
The parents said the accused denied them the opportunity to be cared for and supported by their son in their old age.
A court-appointed medical board to investigate the matter confirmed that there was a medical error in the treatment of the child.
The Al Ain Court of First Instance had earlier issued a ruling directing the hospital and the two doctors treating the child to jointly pay his parents Dh90,000 for damages. The appeals court increased the damages to Dh200,000.
However, both parties appealed the ruling of the Abu Dhabi Supreme Court.
After hearing from all parties, the Supreme Court judge increased the compensation to Dh300,000.
The hospital and two doctors were also told to pay the parents’ legal costs.
