Abu Dhabi Airports Introduces Facial Recognition Technology – Business Traveller

Abu Dhabi Airport has rolled out advanced biometric technology that uses passengers’ facial features to verify their identities, reducing the time they spend going through multiple passport and boarding pass checks before boarding.

Smart cameras capture the faces of passengers and confirm if they can travel.

Then use the same information before boarding, avoiding the need for them to show documents again.

The technology will be implemented in phases, with the first phase currently being tested at the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) facility at Abu Dhabi International Airport, the only U.S. immigration pre-check service in the region that allows passengers to pass U.S. immigration when they are still while in Abu Dhabi.

Fully funded by Abu Dhabi Airports and delivered by Abu Dhabi technology company NEXT50, the system will be tested on Etihad Airways flights to the US and will be introduced in the first phase of a major deployment throughout the flight . Airports for passengers travelling on all airlines in the coming months.

Jamal Salem Al Dhaheri, Managing Director and CEO of Abu Dhabi Airports, said: “We look forward to leveraging this comprehensive biometric technology. Major General Suhail Saeed Al Khaili, Director General of the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security added: “This advanced technology provides passengers with a smooth customer journey through the use of biometric data records, which will enable passengers to travel at Abu Dhabi International Airport Use biometric data only for check-in, immigration, lounge access and boarding, no passport or boarding pass required.”

From 15 November 2022, Etihad Airways will increase its flights to New York John F. Kennedy International Airport from four to 11 weekly.

Mohammad Al Bulooki, Group Chief Operating Officer, Etihad Airways Group, said: “This innovation is an important next step in Etihad’s self-service journey. On top of the benefit of domestic passengers arriving without further delays.”
