The guidance aims to ensure the safety of consumers and suppliers and to improve quality standards in the tourism industry
Abu Dhabi Tourism has issued a new set of rules for the sale of alcoholic beverages, giving businesses six months to comply.
In an advisory issued to distribution companies and retail store managers, the Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism (DCT) specified technical and compositional requirements for alcoholic beverages.
It said the guidelines were developed to ensure the safety of consumers and suppliers.
According to DCT policy, the minimum alcohol concentration must be 0.5%. Wine should not have a vinegary taste or smell, and beer should not contain any artificial sweeteners, flavors and colorings, except caramel.
“Products must be prepared and handled in accordance with proper hygienic conditions,” it added.
Beverages should also be in clean containers that “protect it from contamination and damage.”
All information on ingredients, origin, manufacturer, shelf life and alcohol percentage must be stated on the label.
The rules also cover other details about the type of alcohol used, as well as packaging, transport and storage.
Retail stores and distribution companies have six months to make the necessary adjustments. Legal action should be taken against violators.
