- The Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing Alliance, established by ASPIRE, aims to advance the research and development of autonomous vehicles and artificial intelligence to push the boundaries of future mobility.
- Abu Dhabi is becoming the world capital of extreme autonomous racing. The league announced today that its first self-driving car race will take place in the second quarter of 2024. Several other competitions are expected to be announced in 2023, including a drone race, cross-country competition and more.
In line with its vision to establish a world-class research and development (R&D) center in Abu Dhabi, ASPIRE today announced the launch of the world’s largest autonomous racing league. The alliance will kick off with a self-driving car race in the second quarter of 2024.
The self-driving car race will take place at the iconic Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, in what will be the first in a series of self-driving car races. The $2.25 million prize pool for the Abu Dhabi Autonomous Car Race will use Dallara-built Super Formula cars, which have been backed by Japan Race Promotion, Inc. (JRP). Super Formula cars, the fastest cars in the world outside of Formula 1, will have plenty of gear for self-driving cars.
A core objective of the Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing Alliance is to push the boundaries of autonomous vehicles by hosting challenges to advance the development of autonomous racing and artificial intelligence (AI). In addition, applied research in preparation for the alliance will develop cutting-edge and low-risk solutions to significantly reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions through improved efficiency, while raising safety and performance standards in motorsport and commercial transport.
The JRP will enable ASPIRE to utilize one of the most advanced racing cars in the world to push the limits and high speed of autonomous driving by providing the Abu Dhabi Automated Racing League with exclusive access to the Dallara Super Formula car. Key members of the JRP will also share their significant expertise in race management accumulated over 50 years since 1973.
Race spectators will be invited into a new world of entertainment, experiencing the thrill of face-to-face self-driving racing, live-updated screens with augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) infographics and live displays.

The autonomous vehicle competition will be the first in a series of autonomous vehicle competitions launched by the Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing Federation in 2024, which will include autonomous off-road racing, autonomous drone racing and more. This would make Abu Dubai and the United Arab Emirates the extreme self-driving racing capitals of the world. Open to all teams who have participated in the Autonomous Driving Challenge, teams from universities, public and private research institutions around the world are welcome to participate.
