As part of its mission to support cultural diplomacy through co-production and collaboration, the Abu Dhabi Arts Festival showcased Aisha Juma, an UAE artist, in “Beyond Belief”, an exhibition that brings together various works of art by more than 35 artists. This is the first event held abroad by the Abu Dhabi Art Festival in 2021, and is the result of the art festival’s cooperation with Haus Kunst Mitte culture.

The UAE Ambassador to Germany His Excellency Hafsa Al Ulama and Israel’s Ambassador to Germany His Excellency Jeremy Issacharoff attended the inauguration ceremony.

In his speech at the event, His Excellency Hafsa Al Ulama praised the strong cultural ties between the UAE and Germany, and praised the Abu Dhabi Arts Festival for its commitment to participating in German art exhibitions and festivals. She added that ADF’s sponsorship of “Beyond Belief” reflects Abu Dhabi’s role in promoting global art. The ambassador concluded that art conveys the message of peace and harmony between nations, and fosters a better future free of bigotry and prejudice in a language that everyone can understand.

Open until November 21, “Beyond Faith” explores the rise of modern spirituality: its origin, diverse manifestations, and unique contemporary attributes. The show sparked discussions about the ambiguity and changing concepts of spirituality, and whether it has the potential to transcend faith to overcome rigid religious doctrines and thereby foster a more tolerant society.

Said HE Huda I. Alkhamis-Kanoo, founder of Abu Dhabi Music and Art Foundation and founder and artistic director of Abu Dhabi Music Festival: “The Abu Dhabi Art Festival returns to Berlin Art Week, exhibiting the work of UAE artist Aisha Juma in our “Beyond Belief” exhibition in our cultural partnership with Haus Kunst Mitte. As the world celebrates the first anniversary of the UAE Abraham Agreement, the exhibition transcends spiritual differences. Transcending faith shows Art can build friendship by exploring similarities and differences. These similarities and differences have enriched us and united mankind in tolerance, respect and peace.” I thank HE Hafsa Al Ulama, UAE Ambassador to Germany, for his support, respected attendance, and cultural harmony. Words, and the curator Britta Adler and everyone who made this exhibition possible.

The artists exhibited in “Beyond Faith” provide different ways to enter the spiritual world: some invite us to go deep into mystery experience, some treat spirituality as a stage of identity, and some critically reflect on the social impact or problems of spiritual practice . Also includes artworks representing waves of spiritual interest in the 1960s and early 1980s, including works by Joseph Boyce, George Baselitz, Mary Ballmeister, George Brax, and Anthony Tapis .

In the work of the famous video artist Pipilotti Rist, color opens up a super-sensory dimension, accompanied by visual images that connect matter and spirit. Ayelet Carmi and Meirav Heiman’s video retells a historical story using mysterious metaphorical language. The exhibition also displays works that use spirituality as an expression of identity. Fatma Shanan’s paintings incorporate the traditions and themes of her Druze heritage. The French-Algerian artist Zoulikha Bouabdellah combines imagery from different religious traditions, as does Mikhal Gamzou, his pillar sculptures are engraved with bible and hymns from the Torah. The work of Italian artist Enrico Pietracci further explores the interest in unifying the classic images of mysticism and mysticism related to different religions.

The exhibition also includes critical views on the social manifestations of spiritual practice. Amrita Dhillon’s paintings consider the complex heritage of the gods and the dangers of coercion and domination associated with many spiritual groups. Cornelia Renz explores the power of cultural images, especially religious symbols, and their impact on our perception of reality. Saralisa Volm’s interactive installation questions the principles of modern spiritual practice.

The exhibition also includes artists whose work celebrates the contemplative, intuition and introverted aspects of spirituality. Halina Hildebrand’s layered photos reflect her interest in parallel reality and the power of nature, especially forests, to soothe the soul. Peter Wilde’s work proves that his personal pursuit of spiritual experience is influenced by his Christian faith. Aisha Juma’s work involves higher consciousness, DNA and quantum reality. Her contemporary “intuitive painting” will be juxtaposed with the 120-year-old “automatic painting” from the spiritualist Edelweiss Comprehensive Archives-the world-renowned Hilma af Klint is an active member-as well as an object and a collage Mary Bauermeister (the so-called “Mother of Meteors”) has been studying spiritual subjects for more than half a century.

The Abu Dhabi Festival is supported by its main sponsor Mubadala Investment Company (Mubadala) and its energy partner GS Energy.
