The Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism has announced that Artisan House Abu Dhabi will participate in the London Design Biennale 2023, the world’s leading global stage for contemporary design and design-led innovation, creativity and research. Under this year’s creative theme ‘Global Games: Remapping Collaborations’, House of Artisans will represent Abu Dhabi and UAE handicrafts, highlighting collaborations between handicrafts and architecture, and showcasing the traditional Emirati sadhu craft – Bedou The traditional weaving techniques employed by the people have been enshrined in UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding list in 2011, while raising awareness of the importance of preserving these handicrafts for future generations.
Under the immersive installation ‘The Making of Soof’, the House of Artisans will pay homage to the core materials and tools of Al-Sadu craftsmanship: the wool (Soof) and the spinning machine/spindle (Maghzal or Ghazal), sharing insights into traditional craftsmanship Arabian The weaving technique adopted by women in the United Arab Emirates, as it depicts the important link between culture, tradition and creativity, is passed from older generations to newer ones.
The pavilion celebrates the flow of movement, allowing a shift from soft raw materials to Sadu textiles, the architectural basis for building traditional tent structures.
Taking advantage of the three-week event featuring 40 exhibitors from around the world, showcasing world-leading design, addressing global challenges and inspiring audiences through thought-provoking interactive installations, House of Artisans will use the opportunity to collaborate with international institutions, Designers, artists, crafts, cultural entities and brands.
