Zaafarana Khamis is the mother of 11 children — including two Special Olympics champions Hamda and Maryam — but she is best known to the public as “the mother of the determined.”
Over the years, she has been the image of a mother who goes out of her way to help members of society in need, and she won the Abu Dhabi Award for her time and dedication.
A volunteer for over 15 years, she started giving back to the community in 2007 by volunteering at the Determined Peoples Sports Club in Abu Dhabi and at national and international sporting events. She was also part of the volunteer team when Abu Dhabi hosted Special Olympics World 2019 – the first time the global event was held in the MENA region.
The Abu Dhabi Awards honour anyone working to improve Emirati society, regardless of age, gender, nationality or place of residence. The only and only criterion that nominees must meet is to make a positive contribution to the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and the community.
