Abu Dhabi will host the second leg of “Road to the UFC” next month, with athletes vying for contracts with the world’s leading mixed martial arts promoter.
The win-win competition that kicked off in Singapore in June will see a semi-final in the capital on October 23 (the next day) UFC 280 at the Etihad Arena. UFC confirmed the next phase on Tuesday.
The Road to UFC is designed to showcase the best young talent in Asia and includes four men’s divisions – flyweight, bantamweight, featherweight and lightweight – with eight competitors in each category.At the end, one fighter from each division will receive UFC contract.
Starting with 32 entrants, the field was whittled down to 16 after two days of UFC 275 in Singapore. The first round consists of four episodes.
The semifinals are divided into two episodes, each consisting of four tournaments and an additional non-tournament.
Abu Dhabi’s eight winners will go on to the finals later this year. The finals are scheduled to take place on the preliminary cards for UFC Fight Night.
UFC Road features fighters from UFC academies in Japan, Korea, the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, India and China.
