Abu Dhabi Development Fund provides ongoing support by funding education projects totaling AED2 billion

Throughout its seminal 50-year journey, the Abu Dhabi Development Fund has supported international efforts to achieve sustainable development of the global education sector. To date, it has funded 64 education development projects serving the education sector, with investments totalling AED2 billion in 15 developing countries around the world.

The ADFD’s report, released on International Education Day on January 24, highlighted the importance of supporting the education sector as one of the key pillars of humanitarian and social progress. The fund also aims to develop the competencies of individuals and the qualifications of future generations, enabling them to make societies more stable and productive.

His Excellency Mohammed Saif Al Suwaidi, Director General of ADFD, said: “Given its importance in developing and growing communities, education is one of the key sectors ADFD is keen to support. In line with the fourth objective of our Sustainable Development Goals, which is to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education, and provide lifelong learning opportunities for all, the Fund continues to support the education sector for developing countries by funding several strategic projects that contribute to sustainable economic and social development.”

At the local level, ADFD is committed to supporting the UAE’s education sector to achieve the country’s education strategy and empower future generations. As a key driver in the development process, the fund continues to assist UAE organisations in strengthening their activities and operational sustainability in many areas. Over the past year, despite the challenges of the pandemic, ADFD has provided Bloom Education with approximately AED53 million in financial support, making it the first AED1 billion from the fund to be launched in 2020 companies benefiting from the program. This funding has helped Bloom Education overcome the challenges posed by teaching issues Covid-19 and strengthen its financial position, enabling it to play a role in supporting the national economy.

The following are outstanding projects funded by ADFD in the field of education:

Mohammedia’s University Housing Project – Morocco

ADFD has provided AED 26 million to build a university district on the Mohammed VI University of Health Sciences campus. The project, undertaken by the Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Foundation of Morocco, was designed to the highest international standards and aims to provide high-quality accommodation for 866 students from the surrounding areas of the city of Mohammadiyah, enabling them to Complete higher education.

Public University Development Program – Jordan

ADFD allocated AED 466 million for a programme that includes the development and improvement of nine public universities. The project involves the construction of teaching buildings, auditoriums, laboratories, solar power plants and a desalination plant. The fund also finances the provision of state-of-the-art equipment to modernize the University’s facilities and enhance the student learning experience.

Supporting scientific research – Russia

Valued at AED 1.8 million, ADFD provides scientific laboratory equipment to the Northeastern Federal University (NEFU) in Yakutsk, Russia, to enhance the university’s capacity to conduct professional research in the field of biodiversity. The project will help preserve natural diversity, fund breeding programs, and be used to relocate endangered species in a variety of habitats.

Support Education Projects – Palestine

ADFD, in coordination with the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, has allocated AED 42 million to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). The funding supports educational programs for approximately 15,000 Palestine refugee children in 14 schools in the Gaza Strip.

Supporting the Education Sector – Sudan

As part of the UAE’s commitment to developing the national education system, ADFD funding ensures that 400,000 Sudanese students are provided with educational materials, including chairs and desks. The funding also provides classroom resources and programs to help students thrive in the modern classroom environment.

In addition to this, since its inception in 1971, ADFD has funded multiple projects in 103 developing countries, making a positive contribution to improving the economies of these countries, leading to important social change. To date, the fund’s total financing and investments exceed AED150 billion.
