Surgeons implant device in stomach to relieve patient’s persistent pain

A team of doctors at Madinat Zayed Hospital (MZH) in Abu Dhabi successfully treated a 56-year-old patient with gastroesophageal reflux disease using the latest international surgical methods.
Dr. Mariam Rashid Al Muhairbi, Deputy Executive Medical Director of Al Dhafra Hospital, explained that experts implanted a magnetic ring device called Linx during the operation.
“The patient had a long history of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and was very painful and uncomfortable prior to the Linx procedure. The patient was given earlier medication that did not benefit him much,” she added.
Considered one of the most advanced surgical solutions for treating antireflux globally, the Linx device consists of a series of titanium beads connected to each other to form a ring.
The device is implanted around the lower part of the esophagus and is primarily used to treat severe acid reflux symptoms and relieve a patient’s persistent pain.
GERD occurs when stomach acid flows back into the tube that connects your mouth and stomach.
The operation was performed by Dr. Fadi Bassam Al Mahameed, Consultant General Surgeon and Chief of Surgery, Madinat Zayed Hospital. Day case surgery is performed using laparoscopy, a minimally invasive surgical technique that takes less than 40 minutes.
“The patient was admitted in the morning and discharged on the day of the surgery, returning home in very good condition,” said Dr. Al Muhairbi.
“We are very proud that the Madinat Zayed Hospital team is directed by Dr. Fadi Al Mahameed, Consultant General Surgery and Chief of Surgery at MZH,” she added.
