Woman with unusual and deadly aneurysm in her abdomen had her entire aorta replaced

Doctors at Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City (SSMC) have performed a rare operation to replace the entire abdominal aorta to save the life of a 35-year-old woman with an unusual and deadly aneurysm in her abdomen.

An abdominal aortic aneurysm is an enlarged area in the lower part of the aorta, the main blood vessel that supplies blood to the body. The aorta starts from the heart and runs through the center of the chest and abdomen. It is the largest blood vessel in the body. Thus, a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm can cause life-threatening bleeding.

Analyn Pisao, a Filipino, was rushed to a hospital emergency room with what was initially thought to be severe appendicitis. A CT scan showed she had a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm measuring 9 cm.

Dr Mohamed Baguneid, Consultant and Chairman of the Vascular Surgery Unit, leads a highly skilled team in immediate preparation for advanced procedures.

“The patient came to us with low blood pressure and was in excruciating pain. Essentially, the aorta in her abdomen swelled and ruptured, causing bleeding,” Dr. Baguneid said.

“Given the complexity of her condition and the need for immediate intervention, our team had to mobilize very quickly, so within half an hour of diagnosis, we clamped her aorta to stop the bleeding. Once we were able to At that point, we would perform a laparotomy and replace the entire aorta with an artificial graft in her abdomen.”

Unlike more well-known cardiovascular diseases such as coronary heart disease and stroke, aortic aneurysms are less common and typically affect people aged 70 and over. Several risk factors, such as older age, gender differences, high blood pressure, smoking, and genetic or metabolic abnormalities, may contribute to the development of an aortic aneurysm.

“Unfortunately, half of patients with a ruptured aortic aneurysm die before they even reach the hospital, and only half of those who are brought to the hospital survive, making this condition life-threatening. Typically, the same The incidence of these types of aneurysms is low in the UAE compared to other parts of the world. This may be due to the relatively young population here.”

Dr. Baguneid noted that the case was rare and unusual, and that Pisao was quickly able to receive complex, comprehensive care thanks to SSMC’s cutting-edge diagnostic equipment, treatment techniques, and multidisciplinary expertise.

“The patient was only 35 years old and had no history of smoking. Thanks to the timely diagnosis, I am pleased to say that she is recovering well and was able to go home five days after surgery,” Dr. Baguneid.

Pi Shao breathed a sigh of relief and expressed his gratitude to the medical team.
