Residents reported sand and dust weather in different parts of Dubai on Thursday afternoon. The Met Office has issued a dust weather alert for Abu Dhabi and Dubai due to reduced horizontal visibility, warning motorists to take care while driving.
NCM shares yellow and orange alerts to indicate where dust is expected.
Visibility will drop below 1,000 meters due to the dust, a senior NCM official told Gulf News.
“Strong winds are expected throughout the day, with gusts of 15-25 km/h and sometimes up to 40 km/h.
“The change in weather patterns is due to strong southwesterly and northwesterly winds that keep dust and sand suspended in the air. Winds are also expected to pick up dust and sand during the day, becoming stronger with cloud activity. Western areas like Abu Dhabi , Al Ain and Dubai West areas are most affected.”
Drivers should be careful on the road as dust may affect visibility. People with allergies should also pay attention to protection when going out.
Clouds will also be seen “at times, especially in some western and eastern areas,” according to the National Weather Center.
The Bureau of Meteorology said there will be light rain in the eastern part of the country from Friday, May 19 to Sunday, May 21, before the cloud cover eased on Monday.
Cloudy weather is also expected, especially in eastern and western regions such as Fujairah and Abu Dhabi, the official added.
The situation is expected to continue until Sunday, according to a statement from the NCM.
Temperatures are expected to remain hot on Thursday, with highs dropping to around 40 degrees. Maximum humidity is expected to reach 95%.
Dusty and hazy skies are expected from Friday through Sunday as temperatures drop, the official said.
NCM officials also warned the public about harsh conditions at sea.
“Due to the harsh conditions, people should avoid activities near the beach and by the sea,” he added.
