Solomon Islands is preparing to open a new diplomatic mission in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE) this year.
Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare broke the news yesterday to visiting UAE Non-Resident Ambassador to the Solomon Islands, Abdullah Al Subousi.
Prime Minister Sogavare said that Abu Dhabi is a strategic location for diplomatic missions and a regional hub for the Gulf region, North Africa and East Africa. Many large companies around the world, including small and medium-sized enterprises, have established regional offices and businesses here. .
“The government is committed to establishing a diplomatic mission in Abu Dhabi in 2023. This is an opportunity to strengthen our bilateral relationship and further explore more cooperation in the Gulf region,” he added.
Prime Minister Sogavare emphasized that the establishment of an embassy in Abu Dhabi is a priority for the Solomon Islands and is essential to strengthen SI-UAE cooperation centered on mutual respect and admiration.
He added, “The basis of SI-UAE cooperation is to ensure mutual benefit by cooperating with each other in areas of mutual interest.
“Solomon Islands is grateful for the UAE’s assistance in the Pacific Partnership Program and other developments at bilateral and international levels. Further opportunities for cooperation include renewable energy, tourism investment, aviation, trade and labor mobility.”
Prime Minister Sogavare also took this opportunity to congratulate the UAE for successfully hosting the Dubai World Expo.
He said the theme of “Connecting Minds – Creating the Future” was realized for Solomon Islands through the establishment of trade partnerships, securing distributors for Solomon Islands canned tuna exports.
“This is just the beginning of more opportunities and connections for business, trade and investment,” the Prime Minister added.
The Prime Minister also told the visiting diplomats that Solomon Islands was keen to explore labor mobility collaborations with the UAE in the unskilled and semi-skilled sectors for seasonal or short-term labor mobility opportunities.
He also congratulated the UAE on its readiness to host the upcoming COP28.
“Investment opportunities have increased in the renewable energy sector and in transforming the land and sea transport sector into low-carbon systems,” the prime minister added.
Meanwhile, Ambassador Abdullah Al Subousi told Prime Minister Sogavare that his visit was the first of many more meaningful visits to the Solomon Islands.
“The UAE will strengthen dialogue and cooperation with the Solomon Islands at all levels and our relationship will continue to grow and develop,” he added.
He also conveyed Prime Minister Sogavare’s invitation to attend this year’s COP28, hosted by the UAE, as a guest of honor.
