ABU DHABI – The Abu Dhabi Environment Authority (EAD) has announced the official launch of ADERN (Abu Dhabi Environmental Research Network), a community of research scientists, research institutions and co-innovators to convene research around gaps in scientific knowledge and development experts to continuously improve the emirate’s environment for stakeholders.
Focused on addressing environmental challenges, ADERN will play a vital role in advancing the understanding and implementation of sustainable development in Abu Dhabi.
Recognizing the urgency of the climate agenda and the inextricable link between climate, biodiversity loss and pollution, ADERN will address the climate science-policy agenda by harnessing research resources for interdisciplinary, multisectoral collaboration.
To support ADERN’s research efforts, EAD has developed the Abu Dhabi Environmental Research Requirements Register, a detailed list of more than 200 research requirements. Environmental Knowledge Graph System – A world-first innovation to analyze and communicate causal relationships between humans and the environment and the impact of environmental changes on human well-being.
EAD’s Environmental Portal contains data from its 25 years of research. The Environmental Research Directory will catalog hundreds of environmental researchers and related innovators, research facilities, research projects and activities. Collectively, these tools will help stakeholders make science-based decisions to address the environmental challenges facing the emirate.
Eight universities have joined ADERN as founding institutional members. These include Abu Dhabi University, Al Ain University, American University of Sharjah, Khalifa University, New York University Abu Dhabi, Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates University and Zayed University.

Underscoring its academic prowess, the UAE has seen a remarkable 16-fold increase in research capacity since 2000. This exponential growth, supported by the expansion of existing universities and the establishment of new ones, underscores the UAE’s strong commitment to a knowledge-driven economy and the pursuit of scientific breakthroughs.
As the UAE prepares to host COP28 later this year, the launch of ADERN is a testament to the Emirate of Abu Dhabi’s determination to tackle climate change head-on, and aligns with the Year of Sustainability.
