Abu Dhabi: Abu Dhabi fined a total of 76 food outlets for failing to comply with safety, hygiene and sustainability standards.

The Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority (ADAFSA) said in a statement that it has launched an extensive inspection campaign to enhance food safety and reduce food waste at 4,491 food establishments during Ramadan. The campaign kicks off the week before the holy month and focuses on verifying compliance with food safety regulations, enforcing legislation and promoting the health of food businesses and communities.

Among the 4491 enterprises, 76 were fined and 1628 were warned. Another 256 outlets were asked to pay more attention to their practices.

A total of 2,531 businesses met all safety and sustainability requirements, Adafsa said. Additionally, 12,460 businesses in the emirate of Abu Dhabi have started self-monitoring to reduce food waste.

By the end of Ramadan, food waste in Abu Dhabi had increased by 8%, with 1,500 tons of wasted food.

Adafsa inspections target all establishments in the food chain, including supermarkets, restaurants, distribution centres, food stores, catering companies and markets selling meat, fish, vegetables and fruit. Follow approved procedures to correct any misconduct and ensure the highest level of food safety during Ramadan.

Inspection campaigns complement awareness campaigns aimed at educating the public about the harmful economic and environmental impacts of food waste. The campaign provides guidance for preserving food, encouraging optimal use and changing community behavior about food. It emphasizes meal planning, determining appropriate amounts of food, safe and proper storage, and handling.
