Abu Dhabi G42 Healthcare’s deal with AWS is about getting into the cloud and beyond

[ad_1]

Dubai: Big tech meets the future of medical research? Adding a lot of “clouds” to the mix? It seemed like an immediate reaction when Amazon Web Services, the cloud arm of the U.S. tech and e-commerce giant, signed up with Abu Dhabi-based G42 Healthcare to expand the possibilities of the genome.

According to G42 Healthcare CEO Ashish Koshy, this is not a rare field, but a cornerstone for understanding the nature of future diseases and cures.

The deal also puts the spotlight on Abu Dhabi’s interest in cutting-edge medical research through a deep alliance. Here, Koshy outlines why the AWS deal matters.

The G42 Healthcare-AWS collaboration is about genomes. But isn’t AWS a well-rounded technical specialty rather than a medical field?

One of the problems we see today is the large number of samples such as blood, tissue and other human and non-human biological resources. However, the sequencing infrastructure required to convert biological samples into genomic data is not abundant. Instead of stashing biological samples in biobanks, hospitals, or research centers, we can now bring G42 Healthcare’s omics hub infrastructure to the world using AWS, enabling universal access to gene sequencing and proteomics capabilities.

This partnership will help us provide scalable custom sequencing solutions for B2G, B2B and B2C customers as a service for clinical, consumer and research purposes. We intend to offer our products globally through the AWS cloud infrastructure, allowing us to interact with customers everywhere.

We can deliver omics and insights as an “on-demand service” – samples can be shipped to G42 Healthcare for sequencing and analysis, and best-in-class genomic and proteomic data is connected back to the client, while securely and securely stored in AWS cloud systems.

As part of this collaboration, we are also developing advanced analytics and bioinformatics products.

Governments and researchers will benefit from access to next-generation sequencing (NGS) or third-generation sequencing (TGS) technologies, proteomics and data analysis supported by the most flexible and secure cloud computing environment.

G42 Healthcare can transform genomic data into biological insights to inform drug discovery and clinical applications to uncover new correlations and public data. In addition to DNA sequencing, we can also take advantage of this new capability of proteomics (the study of proteins). We can receive samples from anywhere in the world, provide local sequencing, proteomic analysis, and biobanking when necessary, and send data globally at scale and speed.

G42 Healthcare’s Center of Excellence for Omics – the largest in the region, located in Abu Dhabi – provides more than 500,000 whole genome sequences per year. This partnership will enable fast and efficient global data storage and transfer to customers anytime, anywhere. (Omics is a branch of science that brings together the understanding of genomics, proteomics, phenomics, and more.)

G42 Healthcare has acquired extensive genomic capabilities?

G42 Healthcare operates one of the largest genome sequencing farms in the world. We can provide over 500,000 genomic samples per year and operate all three technology providers – Illumina, BGI and ONT.

Our collaboration with AWS is focused on leveraging this unique infrastructure and changing the way the data it provides reaches the world. In this regard, AWS brings a global cloud network to the data we generate on behalf of our customers.

This means global leadership in data governance, privacy, information security and compliance with the strictest regulations.

Does this require approval from the person AWS is sharing the data with?

Explicit patient consent is at the heart of healthcare and data protection law. Because data security, governance, and privacy are at the core of G42 Healthcare and AWS operations, contracts and regulations exist.

Why did you choose AWS? What did they bring?

AWS has a genome “aware” data infrastructure that will enable G42 Healthcare to offer sequencing-as-a-service globally. Given the size of its portfolio of scientific and genomic solutions, AWS offerings help accelerate time-to-insight. Combined with the agility and scalability powered by an extensive global infrastructure with more than 300 edge locations to support data sovereignty.

They are known to have access to more than 70 life science datasets and a secure infrastructure for global collaboration, which can help customers save up to 90% in computing costs and long-term data storage costs. AWS supports 98 security standards and compliance certifications – more than any other product.
