In an all-European battle, Germany-based G2 Esports defeated Netherlands’ Team Liquid to become the Counter-Strike esports champions and earn $500,000 (AED1.8 million) at the Blast Premier World Finals in Abu Dhabi bonus.
The top prize at the Abu Dhabi Lottery Championship was awarded during the five days of competition at the Etihad Arena on Yas Island. Hundreds of energetic esports and gaming fans took part in the largest and most high-profile Counter-Strike esports tournament to be held in the Middle East.
The tournament took place in the capital and attracted eight of the world’s best esports organizations to share in the $1 million prize pool, following a three-year partnership between the government-initiated Blast and AD Gaming.
G2 Esports’ Australian star Justin Savage was delighted to see his team make history in the Middle East and end the year as Counter-Strike Champions.
“It was a great feeling to win the World Finals. We were all in a positive frame of mind this week, everyone played their minds and it was great to win. The crowd was really good today and the Etihad Arena was really cool. All The fans really made a big noise and created a lively atmosphere for the game.”
The event brought together the world’s best players as well as some of the biggest names in the Middle East, including Saudi Arabian content creator BanderitaX, The Falcons, Nasr Esports, and Fortnite players “Souriano” and “g1ntl” from Galaxy Racer.
The Fan Zone includes a wide range of events as well as booths showcasing the educational aspects of gaming. The industry is expected to grow to $5 billion in the MENA region by 2025.
