Authorities in Abu Dhabi have announced a new project to turn waste carbon into sustainable aviation fuel.

The move comes after the Abu Dhabi Waste Management Company (Tadweer) partnered with LanzaTech NZ, Inc. (LanzaTech) to explore commercial opportunities to develop a large-scale conversion plant to convert solid municipal waste into sustainable alternative fuels.

LanzaTech is an innovative carbon capture and conversion (CCT) company that converts waste carbon into materials such as sustainable fuels, fabrics, packaging and other products people use in their everyday lives.

Eng Ali Al Dhaheri, CEO of Tadweer, said: “This is another great partnership we are exploring in 2023 – the Year of Sustainability in the UAE. A commitment to sustainable development. We believe that waste is a resource to be harnessed and with the support of LanzaTech, we aim to make this a reality”.

“This project represents a huge opportunity to protect the planet by turning waste carbon into sustainable aviation fuel, keeping fossil fuels in the ground,” said LanzaTech CEO Jennifer Holmgren. Carbon found in municipal solid waste incinerated worldwide could play a key role in removing pristine fossil resources used to make fuels and chemicals.

“The fact that our technology has found a home here is a testament to the UAE’s leadership and strong sustainability agenda. This collaboration furthers the US-UAE Partnership for Accelerated Clean Energy (PACE) and contributes to deepening the circular economy and Low-carbon fuel cooperation lays the groundwork.”
