Abu Dhabi Grand Prix: Preview – Aston Martin

[ad_1]

Seb: “As my Grand Prix career draws to a close, it will obviously be a very exciting weekend. I am sure this race will bring back many happy memories from the past 15 years and I want to enjoy my final race with the team and my Met everyone in the sport. Had a fantastic two years in Aston Martin F1, lots of fun moments and some great memories. I wanted to hang out so we’d go and 12 years ago , worked hard and achieved great results on the track where I won my first world title.”

lance: “The track has been redesigned to make overtaking a bit easier and we also have cars that facilitate closer races. With the new layout, hopefully we can perform well and end the year with another positive result. I would also like to congratulate Cypriot Salute to Bastian before his final grand prix. He’s been a great teammate, a great partner for the past two years and I’ve learned a lot from him about racing and life . I wish him and his family the best possible future.”

Overtaking: Redesigned corners have changed the dynamics of the race when it comes to overtaking, and these ground-effect cars are taking it forward again this year. Eighty per cent of the passes take place at the end of the two long DRS zones – stretching all the way to Turns 6 and 9.

Strategy: Pirelli takes the softest of the three compounds to the final. Despite the softness of the tires and the character of the track, tire wear is traditionally not particularly high here. However, wear has increased in 2022 and easier overtaking will likely facilitate more pit stops in the race.

Safety Car: In the early years, there were not many safety cars in Abu Dhabi, but over time, the frequency of safety cars has increased. There have been three safety cars and three VSCs in the past four races, so the chances of disruption changing the outcome of the race are increasing.

The first major change to the track for 2021 is now Turn 5. Now this is a hairpin that really facilitates overtaking. A dash inwards is possible, but this could affect the exit to the 1.2km rear straight. Doing this is crucial for qualifying lap times.

At the end of the second DRS area is the reconfigured Turn 9. Long and banked, it’s possible to run side-by-side through corners, though it’s tricky, and it’s easy to get sidetracked on the exit, which is bad for lap times. Keeping your tires in temperature range is important for the next sequence.

One of the trickiest corners on the track is Turn 12. Over the years, many riders have been stuck in this corner. Cars remained fully loaded at Turn 11 as drivers lined up before braking. But that sets the next two corners under the Yas Governor Hotel. Brave drivers can catch others off guard and move inward here.
