An Abu Dhabi resident has filed a civil lawsuit against his wife, demanding she pay him Dh500,000 in damages after accusing him of stealing her jewellery and other belongings.
The man said in the lawsuit that his wife complained to the authorities that he had stolen Dh500,000 worth of jewellery, bags and clothes from her home.
Prosecutors have taken her husband to court. Both the Abu Dhabi Criminal Court of First Instance and the Court of Appeal acquitted the husband on the grounds that there was insufficient evidence.
The man stated that the defendant’s (his wife’s) actions damaged his reputation and caused him to suffer material and moral damage. That prompted him to fight back with a civil lawsuit against her for damages.
The complainant supported his claim by submitting to the court copies of two decisions of the court of first instance and the court of appeal.
The wife’s lawyer argued that her client had the right to sue the man after he suspected he had stolen her belongings. She said the woman acted in a lawful manner when she lodged a complaint with the man.
The lawyer also asked the court to dismiss the case against her client, stressing that there was no evidence that the man suffered damage or that his reputation was damaged.
After hearing from all parties, the court dismissed the man’s claim for compensation and dismissed the case.
The judge said in his ruling that the defendant exercised his legal rights guaranteed by law in bringing the case against her husband.
The court also said there was no evidence the man suffered material or mental damage.
